Altair Picture Surprise

Greetings to all. I got a surprise in the mail yesterday all the way from New Zealand. It was a CD from Tim Truesdell, SK2 1958-1960 and had 110 Altair photos on it! Tim is currently living in New Zealand. All the pics were in tiff format and about 1 meg. each in size. Tim really sent some neat pics, too.

There is no way to upload Tim's pics even after converting them to jpegs. I also have many many other pics that have not been uploaded to the web site. Therefore, I have decided to use a photo upload service, such as smugmug.com and put ALL the pics that I have into books or albums, etc. There are quite a few hundred pics and I think that this is the only way all the Altair pics can be shown and viewed by the shipmates at their leisure without waiting for the pic pages on the web site to download. Smugmug has no ads and no login is required. The site and/or albums can be password protected if necessary.

Any comments? Any other recommended site instead of Smugmug?

Best Regards To All......Charles

Wow! Charlie, have you Googled "photo upload service"? There are others but I don't know which might be best. We should require a password (given to our shipmates). Danger with sme is getting spam and spyware. Read any cmments.

Hi Charles, The Smugmug suggestion sounds like a good idea to me.A password
would in my estimation potentially "lock out" shipmates who aren't
officially aboard yet.I've always been in favor of showing as many pictures
as possible as a way to stimulate interest in our group. As another
suggestion, maybe some of the crew would like a "copy" of Tim's CD.The
pictures might be especially meaningful to those who served aboard Altair during Tim's tour.I realize this would be time consuming as well as an expense and I merely mention this as a possible alternative.Hope all is well down in East Texas..........Regards,Mike Troiano

Hey Charlie,
From what I have read about smugmug it seems to be a perfect place to record our Altair journey. I don't know which you would choose to use, the personal or the professional, but both are reasonablely priced and as long as you maintain the originals and backup DVDs there is no worry about them going under with the Altair stuff.

Let me know if I can do any thing to help you with this project...

I will get the newsletter into the blog in a day or two. I think I'll also add this topic as well. We need to encourage folks to use it for discussions like this and just to shoot the breeze.

Hi Dick. Hope things are fine up there in Indy. Still pretty hot down here and no rain so we still have burn bans and water rationing. Oh well, it is the "dog days of August."

I have not signed up with Smugmug yet, but will probably go with the "Power User Account" instead of the "Professional." I plan (with everyone's approval" to have all the pics on Smugmug and make the Altair web site just an informational and recruiting site. It will take several weeks to get things the way I want them for the pic site and I will probably experiment around customizing the albums, etc. All of Tim's pics were tiff files about 1 meg each; so, I will have to convert over to jpegs......which is really no big deal. One question is whether to password protect the pic site and I see no reason we would have to as no login is required to view the pics. On the other hand, all the pics are private personal pics and this would keep anyone from "stealing" or using any of our pics for their personal use. What do you think?

Best Regards, Charles

Charles, sounds good. Send me a copy of the CD though not the original. Don't trust the mail with anything original. I will do the conversions probably in Adobe Photoshop and send back to you. Password looks good as well, over 7 digits long and a mixture of numbers and letters that have meaning to a very few. Your idea on formatting the picture frames sounds good as well, just so the identities of those in the pictures are noted somewhere with the photo.

Sorry to hear about your wife, take good care of her! I know about the aging dilemma as well.

Hi Dick. Yes, we sure could use some rain sharing! haha. OK on the password protect the site. Good idea. Most shipmates would probably not be able to upload. It takes special software that is downloaded when you sign up for the service........so, it looks like I will be doing all the uploading. If there is a way to copywrite the entire site, I will do so. Otherwie, you are right there would be no way to copywrite the individual pics. Plus, some are mixed up and I don't know from whom they came from. Apparently, a person can not just use FTP software and upload as it has to be their software. Don't know yet as there are no help files on the web site. I will probably sign up in a
few days; I have a few other irons in the fire that have to be solved first. haha. Thanks for your offer to help! Once I get signed up I can find out if more than one person can access the site and do some work too. That would be nice!

Y'all take care........Charles

Hi Charles,

You might try the watermark" function to copyright the pics. If it doesn't destroy the image when it's viewed but overlays only when it is printed or transferred from viewer to file it would be perfect. That's what prof's use when they provide proof sets to their clients. Just a thought.
